Temple service provides a space for friends and members of Ile Orunmila Oshun and our wider community to learn about orisha and worship together. Each month has teaching on a different topic. This is the second class in the six week series.
II. Who Am I and What Am I Doing Here? These are most personal profound questions wrestled with in all spiritual systems of knowledge. The Ifa scriptures elaborate extensively on this notion of self and destiny. We will examine the concepts of Ori (destiny and the "in dwelling principal"), Emi (Soul) and Ara (Body). This is the third class in the six week series.
III. Let the Elders Guide Us Orisha funfun (cool, cool) are the forces in nature that are cool, temperate, gentle, calming and reflective. These energies are aligned with wisdom and age. We will talk about Obatala, Oduduwa, Orunmila and Nana and their function in our day to day lives. This is the fourth class in the six week series.
IV. From Water Comes Life Oshun, Yemoja, Oya, and Olokun are the life giving and life sustaining water spirits that will be explored and honored in this class. This is the fifth class in the six week series.
V. The Fires That Sustain Us Ogun, Ochosi, Shango, Oya (yes here too) and Aganju are fire deities also considered warrior spirits. We will delineate their particular functions in this creation and in the maintenance of our lives. This is the first class in the six week series.
I. What is Ifa, Who are Orisha? This class will give an overview of the earth centered practice that comes from the Yoruba speaking people of Southwestern Nigeria. It is the source of practices that go by many names in the African Diaspora such as Ifa, Orisha Practice, Regla de Ocha, Lucumi, Santeria, Candomble, Umbanda and Shango. Topics to be introduced in the overview are Cosmology, Philosophy, History and Practice. Join us for our book launch at the Sacred Well in Oakland (Grand Avenue) after our temple service. Refreshments.
